The Pearl After Dark

Pearl District
Currently only available as a private photo tour
Not all night photography requires a tripod. While Night Photography - Skyline + Bridges requires a long shutter and a stable tripod, this photo tour focuses on following the light and capturing artistic images at night without a tripod. Explore the streets of the Pearl District with us after the sun goes down. Dramatic light is everywhere if you are looking for it!

What You'll Learn:
This photo tour will not do a deep dive into basic camera settings. If you are interested in learning camera basics, F-Stops and Shutter Speeds 101 or 102 are for you. However, we will have a brief discussion about the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and how to apply it when shooting at night without a tripod.
We will discuss optimal aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings for night images. If you are not already shooting in manual mode and wish to make the transition, I will show you how to make the switch easy.
We'll cover exposing for the highlights in your scene in order to capture dramatic light. I will also cover center point focusing, metering and white balance.
This photo tour will not be a lesson in street photography, although we will look for "good light" and discuss exactly what that means by evaluating the lighting quality and direction. This is a critical element in capturing street images with impact.

We discuss how to hold your camera in order to take longer exposures without camera shake. We also practice improving composition and perspective through exercises I refer to as "enhancing the everyday" and getting "low and close".

At the end of the photo tour, you will be sent an invite into Portland Photo Tour Forum. This is a group open only to those who have participated in a Portland Photo Tour and are interested in learning, inspiring and having fun with photography. Tag me on the images you post in the forum and I will give you feedback!
