CREATIVE FLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY
2 hr | $229, 1-2 people
International Rose
Test Garden
Currently only available as a private photo tour
Flowers are full of color, depth, texture, light and shadows. With over 10,000 rose bushes of approximately 650 varieties, the International Rose Test Garden is one of Portland most popular attractions. Visit during peak season and learn the secrets to better flower photography.
What You'll Learn:
This photo tour will not do a deep dive into basic camera settings. If you are interested in learning camera basics, F-Stops and Shutter Speeds 101 or 102 are for you. However, we will have a brief discussion about the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and how to apply it to flower photography.
In this lesson, I will walk you through a series of shooting exercises where you are taught a creative technique for shooting flowers, shown examples for inspiration and than practice what you have learned. A macro lens is not required. You can use any lens for close up (not macro) photography.

Shooting exercises include:
-
Focusing at minimal focusing distance (MFD)
-
Back lighting for more dramatic light
-
Getting low + close
-
Environmental (wide angle, close-up) flower photos
-
Exposing for the highlights
-
"Shoot through" technique
-
Composing with complimentary colors
-
Motion blur for abstract images

You can receive immediate feedback by having me review the images you shoot on your LCD. This is a great way to learn!
We will discuss center point focusing, metering, how to choose the right background, lens compression and focal length. I will also cover how light quality, lighting direction, composition and perspective can transform your image. We will review what is "good light" and I will point out examples.

At the end of the photo tour, you will be sent an invite into Portland Photo Tour Forum. This is a group open only to those who have participated in a Portland Photo Tour and are interested in learning, inspiring and having fun with photography. Tag me on the images you post in the forum and I will give you feedback!
