F-STOPS + SHUTTER SPEEDS 101
3 hr | $169
Pearl District
May-Sept 2021
private lessons year round
The perfect place for beginners to get started and an excellent review for the more advanced hobbyist. Finally, understand your camera's settings. You will never want to shoot in "Auto" mode again!
What You'll Learn:
The focus of this lesson is mainly camera settings and features. Lighting, composition and perspective can make a image extraordinary, but if you don't understand your camera settings, it is very difficult to consider lighting, while at the same time trying to figure out your exposure and white balance!
We will cover the exposure triangle (f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO) depth of field, freezing and blurring an action and white balance. You will learn techniques I like to call "game changers" such as shooting in aperture priority mode, exposure compensation and center point focusing. I will answer any equipment questions you may have.

We begin the important conversation about composition including repetition, symmetry, leading lines, rule of thirds and framing. We practice improving composition and perspective through exercises I refer to as "enhancing the everyday" and getting "low and close".

F-Stops + Shutter Speeds 101 will not be about what (the subject) you are shooting but how you are shooting it. It will build the foundation you'll need to continue learning on your photographic journey and ultimately to taking images you love. It is meant to be taken in conjunction with F-Stops + Shutter Speeds 102, but most important is that you practice what you have learned in the days after the lesson.

The first part of the lesson will be at Tanner Springs Park, where we'll review basic camera settings. Then we'll head out around the Pearl District, where you will be given shooting exercises to practice your new camera knowledge. You can receive immediate feedback by having me review the images you shoot on your LCD. This is a great way to learn!
At the end of the photo tour, you will be given assignments to practice your skills, which can be shared in the Portland Photo Tour Forum. This is a group open only to those who have participated in a Portland Photo Tour and are interested in learning, inspiring and having fun with photography. Tag me on your assignment posted in the forum and I will give you feedback!
