Hotel Lucia + Downtown
Group (Max 6 people)
**This photo tour has a prerequisite** Participants should have either taken F-Stops + Shutter Speeds 101 or have a basic knowledge of their camera's settings. You should currently be shooting in aperture priority or shutter priority (utilizing exposure compensation when necessary) or manual mode.
Mastering Manual will make the transition to manual mode simple, ultimately allowing you to have more control over the final image. We also cover transforming a good image into a great image with interesting light.
What You'll Learn:
We'll meet in the back lobby of Hotel Lucia, the perfect place to start, surrounded by the timeless images of Pulitzer prize-winning photographer and Oregon native, David Hume Kennerly. There is about 15-20 minutes of instruction in the cozy lobby before we head out to practice what we've learned.
The focus of this lesson is learning how to shoot in manual mode with some instruction on lighting basics. We cover metering, how to expose for the highlights in your image and the pros and cons of shooting in manual mode.
We also begin the important discussion of what is "good light" and how it can have a huge impact on your photography. As we explore, I will point out examples of different kinds of light. You will be given shooting exercises that will help you recognize good light and become comfortable shooting in manual.
We practice improving composition and perspective. You can receive immediate feedback by having me review the images you shoot on your LCD. I will answer any equipment questions you may have.
At the end of the photo tour, you will be invited to join Portland Photo Tour Forum. This is a Facebook group open only to those who have participated in a Portland Photo Tour and are interested in learning, inspiring and having fun with photography. Tag me and I will give you feedback on your images!
